Where Clair fits
Clair is not a screen reader
VoiceOver already exists, and it's excellent. Clair doesn't replace it or compete with it — it sits alongside the tools you already trust and adds something they don't: reasoning about the physical world.
A screen reader narrates the interface on your device. Clair understands the room you're standing in, the letter in your hand, and the goal you're trying to reach — then talks it through with you like a knowledgeable friend, in short spoken answers you can interrupt at any time.
The north star is simple: empowering, not clinical. Clair should feel like a companion, never like medical equipment.

Scene description
Ask "what's around me?" and Clair describes the scene, leading with what matters most. Follow-up questions stay in context.

Structure-aware reading
Point at a menu, a bill or a letter and Clair reads it intelligently — not just the raw text. Ask "what's the total?" and it answers.

Get your bearings in a new space with conversational, clock-face directions — "a mug at your two o'clock, about arm's length."

Draft a message, set a reminder or look something up. Every outbound action is read back and confirmed by voice first.

Choose to enroll the people you know. Matching happens on your device; face data is encrypted locally and never leaves it.

How it works
Three steps, one conversation
Speak naturally. Clair does the seeing and the reasoning, then talks back — and you can cut in whenever you like.

You speak
Ask a question or give an instruction in your own words. Activate with a press, a gesture, or VoiceOver — no wake word needed.

Clair sees and reasons
The camera captures a frame only when you ask. Claude reasons about the scene, the document or the task, and works out the answer.

Clair speaks back
You hear a short spoken answer, streamed as it forms so it feels immediate. Interrupt any time to redirect — barge-in always works.
Privacy-first, by design
Your world stays yours
Privacy is a non-negotiable constraint in how Clair is built, not a setting you have to go find.
- Nothing persisted server-side. Images and audio answer you in the moment and aren't stored on a server afterward.
- On-device wherever feasible. Text recognition and face matching run on your device. Raw face embeddings never leave it.
- The camera fires only when you ask. Frames are sent for reasoning on an explicit action. Continuous Ambient Mode is a separate, deliberate opt-in.
- Works even offline. Core reading and basic scene help fall back to on-device recognition — and Clair tells you plainly when it does.

Frequently asked
Is Clair a screen reader replacement?
No. VoiceOver already reads your device's interface, and it does that job well. Clair complements it by reasoning about the physical world around you: scenes, documents and everyday tasks. Keep using the screen reader you rely on; Clair adds a new layer on top.
What will it cost?
Pricing hasn't been announced. The beta is free while Clair is in development. If a paid plan arrives later, we'll say so clearly and in advance.
Which devices does it support?
Clair is being built for iPhone first, on iOS 18 and later, with a Mac version planned to follow. We'll share exact requirements as the beta approaches.
Can I interrupt Clair while it's talking?
Always. Interruptibility is a core principle: your voice or a single gesture immediately stops Clair mid-sentence and starts listening, so you can redirect without waiting.
When can I get it?
Clair is in active development and not yet released. Join the waitlist and you'll be among the first invited when the beta opens. We're not announcing a firm date yet.
